Apple’s biggest public business acquisition to date was the US$3 billion purchase of Beats by Dr Dre in 2014 turning the rapper into almost a billionaire overnight. The combined power of these two audio giants pretty much revolutionised the personal audio tech industry and changed the way that we expect to have our music delivered.

Powerbeats Pro in Black with their charging case

Born from a desire to perfect personal music listening, the Powerbeats Pro earphones are certainly stepping up the game. Even just opening the packaging brings drama as you peel back layers of packaging to find the metal earphones case. This charging case ensures that your Powerbeats are charged each time you finish using them. Just 5 minutes on charge ensures 90 minutes of playback and once fully charged you can expect a full 24 hours of battery life. The earphones on their own support about 9 hours of charge which is definitely enough to keep up with anything short of an ultra-marathon. All this power does come at a price and the charging case is exceptionally bulky for such small and lightweight earphones. You won’t be throwing them in your jeans pocket on the way to the office like some of the competitors, but for putting in the gym bag you won’t have an issue.

Slipping the Powerbeats over your ears requires a little bit of practice if you are used to more conventionally shaped earphones or headphones; once they are on, they are not coming off.  The earphones have adjustable, secure-fit ear hooks for lightweight comfort and stability and the design means that they are also sweat and water resistant. Each earbud has controls for volume and skipping to the next track when playing music, as well as a degree of noise isolation. It’s not to the same degree as over-ear headphones, or even some of the more noise-cancellation focussed competitors, but it certainly was enough for this writer to be able to enjoy music while still being able to hear any oncoming traffic on a run. Beats claim that while designing the Powerbeats they listened to what athletes need in an earphone, and certainly these pieces of portable tech do the trick during a workout, with the design meaning that not once was there any awkward readjusting or falling out. The over-ear elements have been softened to protect the sensitive areas behind the ears, and even after prolonged use there was none of the soreness that was associated with earphones of yesteryear.

Unlike some of their competitors the Powerbeats Pro earphones are available in a wide variety of colour to match to your phone/runners/backpack/workout gear of choice! You can chose between colours such as Ivory, Black, Navy and Moss and Beats have also just released a series of brand new colours: Spring Yellow, Cloud Pink, Lava Red and Glacier Blue. If you like those around you to know that you are currently enjoying your tunes from a set of Beats, the brighter colours are certainly less discreet than some other high-end audio alternatives.

Pairing the Powerbeats to Android and iOS was a doddle, and this writer had no issues with audio dropouts or balance inconsistencies. This can be attributed to the new Apple H1 chip that lies within the sleek exterior of each earbud. Once paired you can even listen to music or your favourite podcast with a mate through a function called audio sharing; essentially splitting the Powerbeats to share between two people from one source.

Powerbeats Pro offer an audio sharing feature

So, whether you’re on the go or listening from home the Beats By Dre Powerbeats Pro will certainly keep up with anything you throw at them. While they are a premium option at $349.95 they are worth the spend if you are serious about your audio quality on the go.

Beats By Dr. Dre (Beats) has recently introduced its best-selling product worldwide, Powerbeats Pro, in four new illuminating colours: Spring Yellow, Cloud Pink, Lava Red and Glacier Blue.
The new colours are available now from Apple.com and authorised resellers for $349.95 (AU).
