Meet Harper, Sydney’s newest, biggest, most glamourous and dog friendly rooftop n’ pool at the Kimpton Margot Sydney Hotel

I am with Blondie, she’s awe inspiringly stunning with Jennifer Aniston-like glossy locks, deep soulful dark brown eyes and I just feel like I have been accepted into a VIP club of beautiful people.

Now, if I sound a little ‘barking mad’, the reason for all this gushiness is thanks to Harper. She is pooch friendly and is the biggest, and I recon the best rootop in Sydney. I am at the opening of the long, long (did I say long?) awaited opening of stylish Kimpton Margot Sydney’s rooftop.

Opening night

We last stayed here over a year ago when the hotel opened. But like a perfect wedding outfit, you are never complete if you are not set up top!

Whilst the opening party was fun, we return to see what a normal day in the life of Harper looks like.

Meet Harper – Floor seven

We press ‘7’ at the lifts by the entrance of the Kimpton Margot Sydney Hotel. We zoom up and the doors open. In front of us is Sydney’s largest open-air rooftop bar. While I don’t have a tape measure handy, its big, it’s lush and oh so beautiful with a Palm Springs vibe.

It took years to get planning permission, but Harper is worth the wait. Crafted by the design wizards at Five Foot One Design, it’s a pretty space with a baby-pink tiled bar, cockatoo-yellow booths, cobalt blue seating with cream lounge chairs dotted around. Hotel guests have the luxury of taking a refreshing dip in the pool, so we recon this is another reason to make friends up top.

AIX Rose is definitely the wine of the moment, with big bottles on display. The cocktail menu is a celebration of all things bright, fun, and fruity. We loved the ‘Barbie Girl Slushie’, a fun concoction of rosé, raspberries, strawberries, and rhubarb but honestly this place screams Aperol and prosecco.

Luke Mangan has crafted Harper’s menu. We skip the Sydney rock oysters and instead order salt & pepper squid. It is a more refined version of the crowd pleaser on every pub menu. Here, delicate thin tendrils are dusted with a dark spice mix, served with burn burnt lemon and aioli. It’s superior in every way. Meltingly soft, lightly spiced. The lobster roll is enjoyable topped with Avruga Roe, cucumber and partnered with crisps.

Beer battered barra

It is the fish n’ chips which wins the day. Two pieces of perfectly cooked barramundi has been steamed inside a savoury beer batter, served with fries. Crunchy, luscious and bloomin’ tasty. Life doesn’t get much better (especially if you can befriend a pooch to pat). Simply chase this with a handsome crumbed chicken burger layered with a tame chipotle sauce and fresh slaw. then you will be ready to tackle the cocktail menu again.

For a city which thrives in the sun, we don’t have many accesible rooftop venues, let alone ones that not only allow, but WELCOME our most loved household members. It gives this space a warmth of generosity, playfulness and consideration that life, food, wine and goodtimes are better shared with someone you love – and they may just have four paws.

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
