4 Pines brings burgers and beers to Surry Hills

4pinesSurry Hills, look out, your beer and burger game has been upped.

Why? 4 Pines Brewing Company has headed across the bridge and camped out in a cool new venue on the southern end of Crown Street.

Almost synonymous with Manly and the Northern Beaches these days, they’re the cool kids on the brewing block and they’re not resting on their laurels. They’ve got a Brew Pub in Manly, a Truck Bar in Brookvale, a Public House in Newport and now a Beer and Burger bar.

The new spot slips right into Surry Hills, with perhaps a little bit of a Newtown vibe – exposed brick, graffiti art, chalkboards, black walls, reclaimed wooden planks on the bar keep things nice and relaxed. The space is tight, but upstairs leads two bigger rooms perfect for events or a casual drink out on the balcony while the sun is out. Downstairs, grab a beer from one of the six on tap – all 4 Pines of course, and pull up a keg. Yes, a keg. A bit of nifty glue work converts kegs into stools.

4pine burgerNow, when it comes to beer, you’re a bit spoilt for choice. The IPA is a big favourite among the regulars, but it’s the Pickle Juice that’s been the runaway success. The team developed the rather unique brew to accompany the big burger menu, and it’s been so popular you’ll see it soon at some of their other venues.

It’s a pretty perfect match with The Cheese, a classic cheeseburger given some oomph with a special (spicey) sauce. A real crowd pleaser has been The Pig – with smoked and cured sweet and sour pork belly, cheese, bacon and a hot mayo, we’re not surprised. The team are themselves are big fans of The Tree Hugger, a falafel based vego option that we give a big thumbs up to. Don’t forget to add a side of Chunks – what’s a burger without fries?

Beyond the beer and burgers, if you want some extra heat, the japaleno poppers will get your taste buds fired up. There’s also wings, pork croquettes and a few other sides. Behind the bar, Manly Spirits are the (very nice) house pour (they haven’t forgotten their Manly besties) and there’s a cocktail list certainly worth perusing. We’re big fans of the Leap Frog, not just of the name, but because it brings Manly Spirits gin, the very easy drinking 4 Pines Brookvale Union Ginger Beer together with a house made cucumber and rosemary syrup.

4pine tapNow we have to say, it’s a rare thing when you walk into a bar and discover it’s 1 for the Community Night. Every single Tuesday night, one charity gets nominated (by patrons) and 50%, that’s 50%, of the net profits from the evening go to that charity. You’re giving back with every beer!

That’s Tuesday, on Wednesday there’s a $20 burger and pint special, and on Thursday $16 jugs and $10 cocktails. All through the work week (Mon-Fri), you’ll get $6 pints in a 4-6pm Happy Hour.
