Ron Zacapa Rum Tasting

Aged up high
When not spending her time in the ‘house above the clouds’ – an aging facility in Guatemala 2300m above the sea  – Lorena Vásquez Ampié is travelling around the world to incite a passion for premium Rum.

As one of only three female Master Distillers in the world, she’s more than qualified to do so.  Largely credited for making Ron Zacapa one of the finest rums in the world, next week she’ll be swinging by Sydney to talk about her quest for perfection.

Unlike most rums which are distilled from molasses, Vasquez uses only the first pressing of sugarcane.  She’ll explain how it starts a complex process of blending, then ageing using a Spanish technique more than 500 years old. The finer details are covered too, like the origins of each bottle’s hand-woven band.

23 years for super fine rum? Well worth the wait.
