Inner West’s Not-So-Secret Garden

Free range chickens turning on the rotisserie every day, fresh pastries hot from the oven, Pizza made from flour milled on site. No, this is not one of Sydney’s fine dining establishments. It’s not even a gastro pub. This is a leagues club.

That’s right, Wests Ashfield Leagues has moved the goal posts on club cuisine with The Garden, a new dining concept that’s brought life back to the venue.

Gone is the cafeteria-style dining and traditional club menu. Instead, West Ashfield has transformed their second floor dining room into an indoor oasis. Aptly named The Garden, the 300 seat venue is filled with plants, pots, fairy lights, flowers, a giant gazebo and floor to ceiling windows looking out to the city. The foliage artfully hides the nearby main roads, leaving huge amounts of natural light and a skyline that’s a stunner during sunset.

The Garden concept works a treat because it fits in so well with the club’s community. There’s an impressive kids play area in one section of the room, along with a great kids menu, for the family diners, there are tables for two under the gazebo that make a great spot for a date night, and plenty of big tables and share dishes for a group night out.

The name of the game in the kitchen is farm to fork, with a commitment to locally sourced produce and meet the farmer nights. Game changers on the menu include staff favourite bone marrow on toast and crispy BBQ lamb ribs. And anything from the wood fired pizza oven.

If you’re hungry don’t go past the hearty grass fed beef burger and a glass of Young Henrys on tap, groups will enjoy the whole roasted chicken and the health conscious can grab a foraged salad, with a generous serve of haloumi and garden veggies.

Keep an eye on the events calendar, with upcoming family Easter egg decorating, Pizza with the Players, and live music on Fridays and Saturdays, because the end game is really about creating somewhere Sydneysiders can pop in for a good feed.
