Hey -ho, Toko. Not sure how, but you’ve seemed to land yourself a gig in the pumping of heart Greville Street. Your chic and trendy faithful Sydney-siders will undoubtedly agree, you’re a reliably fabulous upmarket Japanese joint with spectacular cocktails and world class tunes.
But … have you upheld this reputation in Melbourne?
Toko, You haven’t disappointed.
At just a glance, Toko oozes class, sophistication and international recognition. Taking over what was formerly FOG, the large opulent dining room has a NYC vibe that excites and ignites. Nab a spot at the back sushi bar, and you’ll see authentic passionate sushi chefs turning tails into talented adventures like divinely sliced ‘hiramasa no usuzukuri’ -kingfish, yuzu and crunchy sesame seeds with subtle hints of truffle oil.
Ora salmon is visually exciting. A beautiful fresh fillet with a shining glaze is cooked gorgeously rare so you can see the pink fleshy centre. You’ll be licking your fingers after dipping it into the creamy miso paste. Crispy bites of Moreton bay bug tempura arrive next to its crustacean shell head, claws and black beady eyes. The aromatic dipping sauce and yuzu koshou mayo make you realise how lucky our city is to have Japanese fare with flair.
Those who used to frequent the space pre-Toko will be very familiar with the fabulous outdoor bar/courtyard. The main difference now lies in the drinks. An outstanding selection of sake dominates, and contemporary cocktails live on the edge as much as its diners. The rabuba martini awakens the senses with its combination of rhubarb sake, shavings of fresh ginger, and indisputably the world’s most creative garnish, a toothpick of raw sushi.
Its fair to say, Melbourne and Sydney have always rivalled. Now Toko’s in town, we win, hands down.
