When the market is your neighbour, it makes sense that the food on your plate is going to be made with the best produce and freshest ingredients going around, right? Seasonal produce, colourful ingredients, the best of flavours. We think so. And so do Proper & Son, the new café at the South Melbourne market.

Eugene Lavery, chef and South Melbourne resident for 15 years has had a lot of experience with the market and even more with cooking with fresh produce. For him Proper & Son was a place where he could bring this market experience to guests. Extending his kitchen table.

With the market at their fingertips, Proper & Son change the menu weekly to reflect what the market is dishing up for them. But expect the likes of banana bread and honeycomb butter, market fresh fruit, toasted muesli, and vanilla yoghurt, brioche, roasted stone fruit, and hazelnut mascarpone, or the smoked trout, mustard, and gruyere omelette for breakfast.

Lunch is a feast of fresh hot market rolls made to order and freshly roasted meats. You’ll also see the likes of spiced cauliflower and quinoa fritters with yoghurt tahini, and rotating salads. Plus a sweet treat for those afternoons when you need to rest your weary market feet. Coffee is from Toby’s Estate, tea from T Totaler, and hot chocolates from Mork.

It makes hunting and gathering a lot easier.
