It’s likely the word scroll makes you think of the good old days with Nan, or spending your last $2 at the corner bakery. Just as doughnuts, macarons, and everything in between have had their time in the limelight, Julian Chew, former owner of Lip Café in Ivanhoe and serious baker, believes it’s time for the scroll to shine. And he’s giving it a place to do so at Pop Up Scroll, which has, no surprises here, popped up on Smith Street in Collingwood.
When you think about it, it’s madness that we haven’t been eating scrolls on the regular. They are twisted buttery, carby goodness topped with flavours. There is nothing wrong with any of that.
Chew trained under Matt Moran at Aria in Sydney and has had experience with his cream cheese scrolls running out the doors, with about 60 being sold each morning. At Pop Up Scroll he’s baking one batch in the morning for the early risers, then another in that afternoon for those who slump at around 3pm. How kind of him.
Let’s talk about the actual scrolls shall we? Pop Up Scroll offers two types. There are the brioche kind coming in cream cheese, chocolate and caramel, peanut butter and banana, and coconut and white chocolate. These guys are soft and buttery, and oh so good. Then we have the croissant style, served up in either apple and almond, or pistachio and sour cherry, which balances sweet and sour very well. These guys offer more of that French, buttery, and crisp mouth feel. Pick your poison wisely. Or get one of each kind. And don’t forget your Coffee Supreme on the side.
