Naples in the City – Lucio Pizzeria

Lucio PizzeriaGreat things come from unusual places. Who would have thought an overgrown, shaggy haired, curly horned cow (well OK, Bison) could produce milk from the Gods? Well the Romans nurtured it and if you like Mozzarella and you love pizza, you’ll adore Lucio’s.

Lucio De Falco was discovered in Naples, in a town called Pomigliano d’Arco. Lucio is our very own X Factor story of ‘local talent meets Sydney agent’ and the rest is history. He is now in Sydney and the awards for his pizzas just keep piling up.

Having conquered Darlinghurst, Lucio’s latest conquest is Zetland. It might be a Legoland maze of urban high-rise but East Village is a great spot to check out the master from Naples. The Mozzarella Bar has our vote from bufala classica to affumicata (smoked) but we are recommending you to order the Il Gran Tagliere. The board arrives with a tantalising range of buffalo mozzarella; the burrata ricotta divine, and the grilled vegetables are the perfect side of char and sweet.

Of course the big event is the pizza. Two ways, calzone, rosse or bianche. A slice of the mozzarella, porcini mushroom, prosciutto and truffle oil is just not enough. Perfect chewy, crispy, wood smoked base, chased with slow cooked baby octopus with tomato sugo, black olives and capers, is a great option. Wind down with a glass of Prosecco or for vino check out the Chardonnay Luma or a Stella Rossa Barbera; two great Italian wines from a list which contains plenty of fun.

Leave your Vespa at home; Lucio’s marries gorgeous Italian waiters, artisan food and delivers an inspired dining experience you’ll come back to.

Karen Lawson

Karen Lawson's corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). She's the ex MD of Spotify, Peloton and has been a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she's settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
