Letting go at Gravity Floatation Centre

There are very few moments in our lives where we simply let go. Let go of our bodies, our minds, and our thoughts. Maybe in a yoga class you let go of your mind, maybe when you sleep you let go of the body, and maybe when you’re practicing mindfulness you let go of you thoughts, but can you think of a time when you’ve let it all go? Let’s acquaint you with floatation pods.

Gravity floatation pods are not a new phenomenon, but like many other wellbeing devices, are making a strong come back. We made out way to the relaxing and beautiful Gravity Floatation Centre in Northcote for our first floating experience.  Essentially they are human sized (rather large) pods that are filled with water and Epsom salts so you float. The lights then turn off and the pods are sound proof. This results in a complete sensory deprivation experience. For those freaking out right now, you have control over the lights, the lid of the pod, and your neck pillow for support. It’s very far from scary.

So before you ask, let us tell you why floatation pods are good for you. First off, they are seriously relaxing. Once you can surrender into the pod, ie. Turn the lights off and trust that you’ll float; it’s an incredible experience. And the hour goes by faster than you’d think. On top of that, the pods are great for your body. They force a restful state, creating theta-brainwaves in the brain. This means an hour of floating is as restful as four hour’s sleep. They are helpful for any pain and muscle recovery. The salts themselves act as a muscle relaxant, reducing inflammation and help muscle and nerve function, while the position of floating allows your body to be in perfect posture without strain.

And the benefits continue into the night. We’d be lying if we said we’d ever had a better night sleep than the one after our first float. All alarms were missed; a lot of sleep was had.

It’s one of those experiences you need to experience to fully understand and no one experience will be the same. But if you’re concerned about claustrophobia, it being too dark, or being trapped in your pot, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Go forth and float.
