Vibrant, fast paced, colourful, strong, and seriously entertaining. That’s what you get when you combine Africa’s finest acrobats in one circus show, performed in a big top tent. The result? Cirque Africa, which has just landed in Melbourne.
The show is produced and directed by ‘Papa Africa’ aka Winston Ruddle. Impressively, he’s the first black African to own, direct, and produce his own circus show in a big top tent. And we think the result is pretty impressive as well.
What started as an underground acrobatic school in Kinondoni, Africa in 2003, has now been transformed into a global show that’s been performed across USA, Germany, Costa Rica, Italy, France, Romania, Russia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain before making it to our humble land.
The 90 minute show is a mix of acrobatics, theatre, song, and dance. You can expect juggling, mountains made of just men, face painting, loud costumes, hula hoop girls, and one of the most flexible humans you’re likely to see. And it’s all wrapped in an evening of fun and good times.
It opened in Melbourne on the 24th of June and the show will tour a number of locations here in Melbourne before making its way to WA in early 2016. All in all, the 1,100-person crew will spend two years performing across Australia.
This show is excellent family fun, and with a mainly visual show, it’s a beautiful representation of a break down in cultural barriers. See you under the big top.
