Sometimes you don’t want to be a part of the action, but you want a front seat to it. That is exactly what Time Out in Federation Square offers Melbournians and travellers alike. Located smack bang in the middle of the square it offers diners somewhere to grab a drink and a bite to eat while enjoying everything on offer at Fed Square, but at arms length.
At the moment that is most likely going to be the Australian Open. With the big screen showing matches all day, pop-ups throughout the square, and people everywhere, Time Out is a perfect vantage point. It’s also helpful for refuelling before or after making your way to the live action.
To sweeten the deal, Time Out has just had a nice refurbishment and has placed a serious focus on Victorian produce. If you’re stopping by in the mornings you can go for the smashed avocado served with slow roasted tomatoes, and Meredith Feta served on 7-grain toast; how very Melbourne of you. You can also wash it down with a Code Black coffee to really get the local experience.
For lunch, into the afternoon and evening the menu takes inspiration from across the globe. Choose from the Southern fried chicken burger on a toasted brioche bun, a Tuscan chicken pizza, the classic chicken parmigiana or maybe the grilled salmon served with a salad of spinach, tomato, honey roasted beetroot, pomegranate, and freekah.
The drinks list is heavy on the craft beers and the local Australian wines, again bringing a focus to Victoria. Think a Coldstream Pilsner for the beer drinkers and a Scotchman’s Hill Pinot Noir from Bellarine Peninsula for the wine drinkers.
