Just the other week, Australia’s own Fashion Week wrapped up and gave us itchy fashion feet big time. While it’s great to catch a glimpse into fashion’s future, we hate having to wait six months for the runway looks to hit stores.
Thankfully, this year’s MBFWA was a little different than normal. Instead of forward forecasting for Spring/Summer, the fashion on the runways were the designers Resort collections (to align with the international buying phase), which we can more or less get our hands on now, or very soon.
Funnily enough, there wasn’t much of a tropical, resort lounging type of vibe going on – some designers went for summer silhouettes in mostly monochrome, others gave us autumn layers. And most went for tailoring and elegance, rather than flowing beach-worthy styles. But who’s complaining – winter is here and we want something new to wear.
Here’s the top trends from the MBFWA runways that are about to make their way into your wardrobe.
FORGET ORANGE, YELLOW IS THE NEW BLACK

Black, white and blush was everywhere at the shows, which is good, it’s great to have staples. But for those moments when you want to stand out from the crowd, there’s no denying that yellow is the go-to colour of the season. In every shade under the sun, while yellow will get you noticed in a sea of wintery monochrome, it’s not about being blaring or showy, all designers agreed yellow would be a statement in elegance.

SHOW US YOUR SHOULDERS

If there’s one body part you can expect to bare in the coming season, it’s your shoulders. One shoulder or two, a little or a lot; there’s a cut for everyone. The greatest thing about this trend is it’s a flatter-all style. Shoulders are sexy, and we’re happy to show them off – even if it’s under a heavy coat for the most part of winter.

SHEER GOODNESS

Don’t worry, you don’t need to give up carbs and donuts for this one. This trend has stepped into the elegance realm and you can expect longer hemlines and modest lining to conceal your bumps and unmentionables, to some degree. It was pretty but sexy, all while remaining high class.

YOU HAVE NEVER WANTED TO WORKOUT SO BAD

Yes, sports luxe has been a ‘thing’ for a long time but it’s now gone from just ‘cool to workout in’ to the cooler than your workout clothes, everyday clothes, and well, everything you own. It’s not just workout wear either – you’re going to be tempted to brave the freezing cold winter oceans just so you have an excuse to wear these rashies and beautiful long-sleeve scuba one pieces.

SEXY SHINE
Kitx, Han, Daniel Avakian
Slinky, silky, shiny. It was everywhere and we want it bad. Ditch the pyjama-inspired silhouettes (we never really got that trend anyway) and go for sexy, or structured, depending on whether you have a hot date, or an important business meeting.
