There is a particular kind of stain that stops being a stain and becomes part of the furniture. The splash of shiraz on the rug from a dinner party two winters ago. The muddy paw print on the cushion that is flipped over and everyone agrees not to mention. The back seat of the car, which at this point is less upholstery and more archaeological record of every school run, beach trip and drive-thru dinner since 2023.
We’ve all got them. We’ve all learned to angle a cushion just so, or drop a throw over the arm of the sofa with the casual confidence of someone styling a magazine shoot rather than hiding a crime scene.
Dreame has decided enough is enough. Its two new carpet cleaners are built around the one ingredient: steam. Real steam, at 100°C. And it turns out heat is the thing that finally shifts the stains that you’ve been fighting with.
First, let’s talk about looks
Cleaning appliances have historically been designed by people who assumed you’d hide them in the dark at the back of the laundry, next to the mop bucket and the broken clothes airer. Fair enough, given most of them look like something salvaged from a 1990s car park.
Dreame has clearly not received that memo. Both machines are clean lined and sleek, the kind of appliance you wouldn’t mind catching sight of in the hallway. The N20 Steam has a touch screen instead of a dashboard of mystery buttons, and when you’re finished, the hose wraps neatly around its compact body like a well-behaved extension cord. No tangle, no octopus of tubes falling out of the cupboard at you. It’s rectangular design – let’s say the same size as your Mum or Dad’s old 80s briefcase, slots easily into the cupboard ready to go to the battle with it’s Star Wars like design. The CU20 required a whole cupboard to itself, but then it was designed for larger spaces and is a professional sized and operating carpet cleaner.
The big gun: Dreame CU20 Pro Steam
The CU20 Pro is the one you bring out when the whole house needs a reset. Think of it as the deep tissue massage of carpet care. It heats steam past 100°C in about 18 seconds, and that steam goes right down into the carpet roots, softening the old, set-in grime that plain water and shampoo only skim over. Dreame’s lab testing puts bacteria removal at 99.99%, which is a very comforting number when you consider what actually lives in a carpet.
Underneath, dual brushes beat the pile 30 times a second while 18,000Pa of suction pulls everything back out. You barely push. It glides, it does the work, and you get to feel productive without breaking a sweat, which is exactly the ratio we’re after.
And then there’s moveability. An 8m power cord means you’re not unplugging and replugging your way around the house like a tired electrician. The 4L water tank covers up to 150m² before it needs a refill, so you can do the lounge, the hallway and the bedrooms in one satisfying lap. It’s an upright at 8.6kg, so it lives downstairs and rolls rather than carries, but on flat ground it moves with ease.
The bit that genuinely changes the game is drying. Steam uses less water than a traditional wash, and heated air runs through the base as you go, so carpets are dry in around 35 minutes. That’s clean in the morning and barefoot by lunch. No more three-day exclusion zones, no towels laid out like stepping stones across the lounge room, no damp-dog smell lingering for the weekend.
It moonlights, too. A 2.5m hose comes with a sofa brush, a flat brush, a mini brush for the stairs and a window brush with an extension pole. Carpets, couches, stairs and windows from one machine. Overachieving with multiple strong skill sets.
The one you’ll reach for every week: Dreame N20 Steam
If the CU20 Pro is the deep clean, the N20 Steam is your everyday hero, the one that lives within arm’s reach and gets out the moment something hits the floor. It’s a compact portable spot cleaner at 5.5kg, roughly the size of a shoebox and a half, and you can pick it up with one hand and carry it room to room without a second thought. And honestly, it’s the more exciting of the two.
Here’s why. Most spot cleaners give you one setting: wet. The N20 gives you four. Cold wash, hot wash at 70°C, steam wash, and pure 100°C steam. That matters more than you’d think. Hot water melts grease, sauces, coffee, red wine and even crayon (yes, someone drew on the ottoman). But protein stains like milk, egg, blood and the inevitable pet vomit need cold water, because heat sets them into the fabric. The N20 lets you choose the right weapon for the mess rather than accidentally making it permanent.
Then there’s the steam. The boiler heats to 170°C in seconds to produce dense, consistent steam that Dreame’s testing says removes 99.9% of bacteria and more than 99% of dust mites. Mattresses, kids’ car seats, the dog’s bed, the armchair everyone fights over. This is the difference between looking clean and actually being clean, and you can feel it. Fabrics come up fresh, soft and smelling of nothing at all, which is precisely what clean should smell like. Better still, they’re dry in around 20 minutes.
The small touches are where it really wins. It mixes the cleaning solution for you, and one fill lasts about a month. An overflow sensor stops suction before the dirty tank spills, so there’s no tidal wave of grey water across the floor you just cleaned. And a one-press self-clean flushes the hose in about 40 seconds, which means you never have to face that sour, stale-water smell that ruins most spot cleaners by week three. Rinsing out a grubby hose by hand remains one of the great indignities of adult life. Consider it retired.
It doesn’t stop at fabric, either. Swap on the concentrator nozzle, grout brush or small round brush and it blasts jets of steam into shower grout, window tracks, sink edges and around the base of the toilet. A spot cleaner that quietly doubles as a bathroom steamer. It’s literally a Dreame come true…
Take it to the car
This is where the N20 really earns its keep. Dreame lists car interiors right alongside carpets and sofas, and at 5.5kg it goes from the laundry to the driveway as easily as a shopping bag.
Think about what a car goes through in a Sydney summer. Sand ground into the floor mats after Bronte, sunscreen handprints across the seats, a flat white that didn’t survive the roundabout or the wet dog after the beach. The N20 handles the lot: hot wash for the greasy stuff, cold wash for the milk that leaked from the drink bottle, and a pass of steam across the seats and child seat covers to deal with what you can’t see. The concentrator nozzle gets into seat rails, door pockets and cup holders, and 17,000Pa of suction lifts the mess the car vacuum always leaves behind.
The result is that new car feeling, minus the new car price.
One practical note: it’s corded, not battery powered. The 4.6m cord and 1.5m hose give you decent reach, but you’ll want the car parked near a garage power point or an outdoor extension lead handy. A small trade-off for steam this hot, and a lot cheaper than a professional detail.
The verdict
You don’t strictly need both. If your home is mostly carpet and you want that big, satisfying whole-house clean, the CU20 Pro is your machine. If you have rugs rather than wall-to-wall carpet, a couch that sees a lot of life, kids, pets, or a car that has become a mobile pantry, the N20 Steam is perhaps one to try first. Together, though, they cover every soft surface you own, plus the grout and windows. And the feeling at the end is the real selling point. Not the tidy, shoved-in-a-cupboard kind of clean, but the genuine, fresh, steamed-to-the-roots kind. The kind where you walk barefoot across the rug, sink into the couch and finally stop angling that cushion.
What we’re Addicted to: 100°C steam across both machines, the N20’s clever hot and cold washing for different stains, a hose that cleans itself, carpets dry in around 35 minutes, and a design sleek enough to leave out.
What we need to be more Addicted to: A cordless N20 for the car would be perfection, and the CU20 Pro’s 8.6kg makes it one for the ground floor rather than hauling up the stairs.
