First there was Pocket, then came Stitch, and now we have Button.
Sounding more like a haberdashery than a trio of Sydney small bars, you can rest assured it’s all booze and no thimbles at this new Surry Hills drinking den.
The lads behind the booze – Karl & Christophe (and their new ex-Ivy recruit Jimmy) – have converted a dingy disused office space to create an oh-so ‘now’ Pirate’s den. Imagine the hull of a ship with dim lighting, timber finishes, rustic lamps and vintage led light windows. And in case you’re cringing, don’t. There’s no kitsch mermaid paraphernalia or platted rope in sight.
Head starboard and acquaint yourself with the impressive nine-metre bar stacked with more than 400 bottles of serious liquor. Think house-infused rum and gin, imported whisky and a solid list of lady-friendly cocktails. For the straight shooter, there’s a good selection of homegrown and international wines, and plenty of the bubbly stuff too.
It’s hard to pass up house-spiced rum with freshly pressed pear juice (for the bargain price of $9.50) or the ‘Tainted Love’ featuring apricot-infused dark rum, orange liqueur Clement Creole, lemon juice, honey and a dash of chili bitters and egg white. Don’t mind if we do.
Now when it comes to food, well, there is none. This is a watering hole by the strictest of definitions. There are, however, bowls of pistachio nuts and takeaway menus from the neighbours. Yep, you read right – order a spot of Thai or Vietnamese, pull up a stool at the communal table and eat-in, Button style.
