Today C.H.James is the newest café to open in Fairfield. In the 1870s and 1880s Charles Henry James was a businessman and a leader. He championed growth in the north and was known for his unique style. A hipster before his time, maybe? Well, we do have him to thank for inspiring this new eatery on Station Street.
C.H. James joins the likes of Fifteen Pounds and A1 Bakery in spreading the café culture of the north even further out, claiming its spot among more old school establishments. The focus is on locally sourced produce with names like Melbourne City Rooftop Honey and Amore Cheeses placed proudly on the menu. The clean design makes a café regular feel right at home, so does the Small Batch coffee.
The breakfast menu starts with Dr. Marty Crumpets with whipped ricotta, strawberries, and rooftop honey, and moves to the ricotta and smoked trout with soft scrambled eggs with a chive and coriander pesto.
The lunch menu proves that everyone isn’t solely focused on all day breakfast these days. Beautiful house made gnocchi is served with roasted tomato, asparagus, and broad beans, while spiced pork sausages are served with Asian coleslaw, and Sriracha mayo. If you’re lingering, order some of the 2014 Pizzini Prosecco from the King Valley, or perhaps a Holgate Brewhouse IPA.
