Burgers Baby, Burgers

National Burger DayI like big buns and I cannot lie. Big, toasted, charred, buttered, brioche – the burger has gone from humble milk bar and McDonalds fare all the way to the realm of fine dining.

And now there’s even a National Burger Day. Yes, that’s right, on May 28th, it’s all about the burgers – and in some places they’re even free.

So when just about every café, bar, restaurant and fast food joint in town are “doing” burgers, where do you go? Well, here are three of our favourites:

Chur Burger

When a fine dining restaurant’s pop up burger stand takes over the entire kitchen, you know something special is going on. Warren Turnbull took his French restaurant Assiette and turned it into Chur – where the music is loud, the décor is sparse and the burgers are seriously good. Don’t go past the pulled pork with fennel mayo, and a side of sweet potato fries for good measure. On Weds 28th, Chur has teamed up with ZOOSH dressings so you can hashtag away your hunger with a free meal. Chur in Surry Hills will be giving away a free burger, salad and chips to customers who share a social media post with #ZOOSHfoods and #NationalBurgerDay.

Mary’s

Like Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s, the burger can sometimes taste even better before noon. Mary’s is Newtown’s favourite fried chicken and burger joint – the burgers are just damn good – but what about the breakfast burger? Making a rare appearance at the CarriageWorks Rootstock market earlier this year, the Mary’s breakfast burger is a winner. Brioche bun, a hearty hash brown deep fried to perfection, crispy bacon, dripping egg and killer sauce – this is a weekend pick me up if we’ve ever seen one. So, if Mary’s does decide to do breakfast again, start lining up now. In the meantime, use lunch and dinner to get your burger fix.

The Potting Shed

If you haven’t heard of the Rockpool Bar and Grill Wagyu Burger, you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years. Or you’re a vegetarian. The famous beast of a burger is a serious feast. Brioche bun, zuni pickle, crispy bacon, Gruyere Cheese, and of course, David  Blackmore’s Wagyu, it’s a decadent, delicious dish. Well, now there’s a contender. The Potting Shed is the brand new bar/restaurant from The Grounds of Alexandria and it also uses David Blackmore’s Wagyu beef for its burger. Served on a wooden board with a tiny terracotta pot filled with chips, this is miles away from the glamour of the Rockpool brand, but this burger definitely stacks up.
