What happens when you put a concrete swimming pool made for skating into a Fitzroy restaurant and then serve frozen cocktails and tacos? Well you’ll get the latest instalment from the Beach Burrito crew, at their Gertrude Street venue. And Melbourne’s first Beach Burrito location. Funnily enough located right near Trippy Taco. A new Mexican precinct perhaps?
From brothers Blake and Craig Read this new venue pays homage to the days back in the 80’s where skateboarding and abandoned pools made for excellent playgrounds and community spaces. The rest of the venue boasts exposed brick, steel, cages, and tiled tables, all flooded with neon lights creating a space that feels like an underground world you’ve never been a part of but always wanted to be. Surrounding the concrete wonderland on the first floor you’ll find booth-seating perfect for evenings eating and drinking with friends, while the second mezzanine level gives you a nice vantage point for watching the action. It’s the perfect laid-back environment that Melbourne loves to soak up.
Let’s get serious for a moment and talk about the food. This menu is extensive and lets you create your own meal with all sorts of flavour combinations offered with a range of Mexican dishes. Start with chips and salsa, a starter of nachos with beef, chilli con carne, guacamole, and sour cream, or the vegetarian version. Larger nachos and chilli fries keep the menu rolling, while burritos and burrito bowls with options like the pulled pork, lime chilli garlic prawn or even slow roasted vegetable and tofu burrito make for good main options. The menu keeps on rolling with fajitas, chimichangas, quesadillas, salads, tacos of pulled pork with frijoles especial, cabbage, chipotle mayo, and chilli salt, or the grilled haloumi, frijoles, pico de gallo, sweet corn, mango salsa, and chilli salt, and even sweet churros for one, two or the whole table.
The buckets of beers go well with a plate of tacos, so do the fresh cocktails. There’s one red and one white wine, frozen cocktails, and sangria. It’s about the good times.
