Alexandria and Artarmon suddenly have a lot more in common. Yes they are on opposite sides of the bridge, and for some of us, that makes them polar opposite, but they are now both home to cool cafes.
Anvil Coffee Co. has opened in Artarmon’s otherwise empty warehouse and we’re putting bets on it transforming the quiet patch of the suburb into a hub, just like the Grounds of Alexandria.
This is definitely more industrial chic than secret garden, but there’s the same commitment to good food and great coffee.
Anvil Coffee Co. Artarmon is the second outlet for Paul Makomaski and Rani Reddy, whose Anvil Coffee Co. Kirribilli was an unexpected hit. For us it’s a no-brainer – good coffee right at a ferry stop. Artarmon doesn’t have the luxury of convenience but they’re definitely not resting on their laurels.
Yes, the popular Smithie Roll (poached egg, winter slaw, aioli, caramelised onion) and Arabian eggs (poached eggs, Greek yoghurt, onion jam, chilli and lemon juice burnt butter with mint on sourdough) make an appearance on a food menu that’s quite similar to Kirribilli, but there’s a few new gems worth a try.

The Ivan (poached egg, seasonal greens, tomato, dukkah) already has the foodies talking.
The food will have you through the door but the coffee menu is where Anvil and Co Artarmon really gets to shine.
Cold drip, espresso, filtered – they’re covering all their bases. And the La Marzocco coffee machine is never idle.
Like the Grounds, Anvil Coffee Co. has plenty of space to keep growing – the high ceilings, big windows and outdoor and indoor seating keep things light and stress-free. But get in now because we do expect the crowds to come.
