Behold! I am Picasso. Art that looks good enough to eat – because it is edible – courtesy of Sydney’s Koko Kawaii café. Sitting under a pink cherry blossom tree, we sip fairytale drinks scented with lychee and butterfly pea flowers, warming up with a homemade spiced apple tea. It’s like drinking Grandmother’s apple pie.
Koko Kawaii specialises in Taiyaki, a Japanese fish-shaped cake with a range of savoury or sweet fillings. We indulged in the gloriously oozy goo of Oreo & Chocolate Custard as well as a tasty Cheese Lovers fish. There are regular toasties too, including smashed avo or bacon and eggs if you’re stopping by for breakfast.
But the really unique feature is all the art experiences the café offers. You can paint a cookie (koala, kitty or penguin) – the danger here is becoming too attached to your artwork to eat it. Roll up the art trolley and draw, paint and collage to your heart’s content. Or go wild in the Splash Room, where armed with a jumpsuit and easel, you can splash, pour, flick and scatter pigment to create a messy masterpiece.
If you bring tweens to this pastel paradise – beware! It’s a treasure trove of cute stationery, stickers, badges and a design-your-own key-chain/bag-charm station. Cinnamoroll and his kawaii anime friends are coming for your purse-strings…
Koko Kawaii also does parties and soon plans to offer clay painting and cake decoration. We absolutely loved it and will definitely be visiting again to create more spectacular works of art.
