Wine pub. Not brew pub or gastro pub, or just a good old pub pub. Darlinghurst’s recently revamped East Village Sydney has dedicated its ground floor to wine. That’s right. There are wine based cocktails, and a daily Cellar List, where the oenophile staff pick 10 bottles of wine to feature, by the glass. We’re not talking your average house wines, these are a little left of field, more akin to a comprehensive restaurant wine list, without the price tag or the pomp.
They may be in charge of a 100 year old pub, but general manager Lee Potter Cavanagh and bar manager Reece Griffiths are bringing the new wave wine scene to the table. Start the night with Cole de Rhone or She and T cocktails, paired with moreish chicken Caesar croquettes from head chef Graham Johns, before moving on to bold reds for a flank steak. The half roast chicken with sweet corn, basil and roasted heirloom tomatoes is much much better than standard pub fair, along with a wagyu burger, sticky ribs and some truly awesome sweet potato fries worth trying.
Sports pub. Yes that’s right. The East Village wears many hats – upstairs is the very appropriately named Athletic Club. There are nine huge TV screens, including one in a private room, so you’ll never miss a match, set or lap again. The leather booths are just crying out for a boys night (ladies remember the wine bar is just downstairs).
And what’s that? There’s one more offering? That’s right. The East Village Terrace Bar has just opened. Rooftop views out over the city, fresh summery dishes like burrata salads, G & T cocktails. Sunday sessions here we come!
