Tucked into one of Stanley Street’s terrace houses is the brand new Kubrick’s Bar. Famous director Stanley Kubrick is the bar’s namesake and a spot on Stanley St sealed the deal for young gun Timmy Maxwell, who is using Kubrick’s style of “abstract in subject but technically perfectionist”.
Like the eclectic director, Kubrick’s brings a little bit of every genre to the table, and it works. Out the back hangs a vintage chandelier, a family heirloom passed down from Timmy’s great grandmother, which is hooked up to a web of individual bulbs.
The bright geometric wall mural is by 19-year old street artist Jerry Washington, and on the green wall opposite is a mass of happy ferns. Above the bar hang Andéol Textile silk lights and on the walls are metal sculptures by Bondi based artist Dion Horstmans. This space is old, new, chic, rock, grunge and glamour all rolled into one.
At the bar, Maxwell’s right hand woman is mixologist Dee Stewart who takes charge with an eclectic cocktail list that will knock your socks off if you let her run wild. The Kubricks Fizz is their signature drink, with a hit of fresh grapefruit, the strawberry daiquiri punch is elevated from the punch bowl with home-diffused kaffir lime leaves.
Maxwell is determined to keep Kubricks fun and casual – all the wines are available by the glass, he’ll leave the bottle in front of you and charge just what you drink. The same attitude goes for the food so sit back and enjoy the ride.
