The Understudy

In theatrical terms, the understudy is that surprising, fresh young thing who waits in the wings for that big break – their time to shine beneath the spotlight.

Melbourne’s freshest, most surprising new venue fits the description to a tee. And its time is now.

The Understudy is in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD theatre district, where the smell of grease paint clears the nostrils and enlivens the senses. It’s in a basement, accessible through a wardrobe door and the Alice In Wonderland-like aesthetic continues in the drinks menu.

With so many choices – from sherries to wines to beers and spirits – the best way to test the cocktail-laced waters is to book yourself a degustation. Leave the car at home and pick a trusted friend and prepare to sip your way to exotic fun. Juniper Absinthe with French Vermouth and a drizzle of sage and lemon, anyone? (order the Thujone Cocktail). Or perhaps Reposada Tequila, Avocado, cinnamon and soymilk and salt is more to your tastebuds fancy? (they call that one the Nieve)

As with any good theatre, a ‘Backstage Pass’ will give you access to member privileges. Worth looking into if you like your drinks with a muddle of whimsy.
