A new home for performing arts
Wedged between a warehouse and a factory in a hidden back alley, you will find Sydney’s newest performance space: The Red Rattler.
Like Mars, this red star comes out in the evening to shine light on musicians, designers, multi-media artists and film makers who were previously staging their shows in illegal warehouses.
Tired of getting shut down by the constabulary and frustrated with the high rents demanded for performance spaces, five activist women joined forces to buy, renovate and open this genuinely unique not-for-profit venue.
With serious eco-credentials in everything from what’s in the fridge to what you sit on, you can order a glass of organic Rosnay red, a Phoenix fizzy or a Coopers and plant yourself on an old RSL booth seat in time for the night’s performance.
The desired effect? Unintimidating bohemia, an all-ages crowd (supervised children are allowed in) and a real sense of theatre in everything from the rockabilly outfits of the bar staff to the way that everyone seems to have a mischievous sparkle in their eye.
Upcoming gigs include The Lady Sings it Better, a night of female singers belting out masculine tunes by the likes of AC/DC and Leonard Cohen, Barons of Tang and Cut+Paste, a sustainable craft fest and makers market.
