Oden Melbourne: Elevated Japanese One-Pot Dining Lands on Bourke Street

Australians can be divided into two categories. Those who’ve been to Japan, and those who haven’t. For the first group, it’s impossible not to be swept up by the ancient heritage, the calm respectfulness of its people, and the centuries-old culinary traditions. One particular dish, the Japanese Oden is an iconic speciality. In literal terms it is a hearty Japanese one pot, with a variety of ingredients in a warming soy-based broth. Its nourishing, popular and utterly delicious.

For those who haven’t had the fortune of visiting the country itself, and experiencing such authentic Japanese delights, there is a way. And it doesn’t require a passport.

Meet Oden: Melbourne’s First Elevated Oden Spot

Oden is the latest creation of the gracious and humble powerhouse Melanie Zhang. A mother of two and the force behind her Melbourne’s acclaimed fine dining Ishizuka, she is unstoppable. Whilst not as formal, or pocket heavy, this casual younger sibling doesn’t under shadow. The newest baby, named after one of Zhang’s favourite dishes, is an elevated take on Japan’s one pot dish.

The interior is elegant and cosy with subtle Japanese touches. Designed by renowned architects Russell & George, the space blends elegance and warmth with a pared back palate to echo the hammer copper pots on display.

A Menu Steeped in Tradition and Seasonality

Executive Chef Katsuji Yoshino curated a thoughtful menu inspired by tradition with seasonal produce. Mandatory to start with an Oden. On a freezing Melbourne evening, their signature ‘truffle half boiled egg’ is simply magical. A simmering earthy broth with velvety mushrooms and protein rich bites provide warmth, not just for the belly but for the soul. A plump juicy slow braised tomato bathes in its glistening consommé, crowned with delicate pearl pops of black caviar.  From the Grill’ section ‘wagyu is as theatrical as it is delicious, as you see the flames erupt from the open kitchen, smell the smokiness and taste the robust decadently moist meat.

Just as serious is their drinks list. Be it a highball of Japanese Whiskey, a crisp Crawford River Riesling, or a barrel poured sake, each pairing is purposeful and precise.

Whether you’ve explored Japan or not, if you’re looking to experience the wonders of culinary history, authentic flavours and an immersion in tradition, an experience at Oden, ticks that box.
