Bargains in the flesh

For second-life goods, eBay and GraysOnline are staple ports of call. Bravo for the wonders of today’s technology, but there are times when your purchase needs inspecting and a little more soul. Perhaps you’re seeking a pre-loved wooden rocking horse, or a ‘wow piece’ retro drinks trolley for the home. Best bypass the net and shop in the flesh.

Mitchell Road Auctions, an old warehouse in Alexandria, is then your destination. Their general sales held each Monday has been a hit with adroit buyers for years, although on some weeks, stock may appeal far more than others (don’t let one empty-handed visit spoil the experience).

It’s the specialty sale evenings that bring out the true treasure hunters and hopefuls.  ‘Garageanalia’ sales are all about the type of bric-a-brac in Pop’s old shed. Old petrol cans, bottles, metal signs, tools and auto-related parts. On ‘Mondo Medical’ nights you can kit out a surgery or science lab with apothecary bottles, curious medical instruments and your very own skeleton.

Tonight is a taste of all things ‘Design Retro’ 20th Century style. Popular for Parker, Chiswell, and Kartell furniture, you can find treasures that will complete any 60s, 70s or 80s revival.

Schedules are published three or four times a year. Look up the best times to find a pre-loved piece or to off-load.
