The Greens is Not Your Normal Bowling Club

Clovelly’s bowling club may hold the crown for Sydney’s best view mid-lunge, but The Greens is more than just a pretty spot to bowl and gaze out at the city skyline. Pair the view (which we’re not denying is awesome) with their recent renovation and they’ve now got the whole package. View? Tick. Beer garden? You bet. Refurbished bistro with a menu full of fresh produce and incredible flavours? At an affordable price? Yes and yes.

Now you can come for a day of bowls and beers, or just pop by for coffee, food or cocktails from 11.30am til late every day of the week.

On a beautiful summer’s day, you won’t want to leave the outdoor courtyard complete with a herb and veggie garden and open fire pits. Except maybe when hunger sets in, which is your cue to head into the 130-seater bistro that has been fitted out with pastel and earthy tones, pale timber and welcoming homely vibe. Get comfy, there’s no need to rush.

Learning a thing or two about giving the people what they want, Lilly and Nathan Fasan have taken their know-how from their time at The Grounds and worked wonders on the tired, old school bowling digs that  used to be known as Norths Bowlo in a former life.

Lilly has stepped into the role of Executive Chef and has put together a fresh and colourful menu that’s uncomplicated, wholesome and made for sharing. Set up for lunch, dinner and snacks, the menu is a mix of share plates, mains, and supersized sharing dishes for two or more with some sweet treats to round up the food side of things.

The House Cured Ocean Trout with housemade pickled cucumbers, caper berries, quail eggs, and lemon crème fraîche is a rainbow of perfection on a plate and the Crumbed Bone Marrow is not what you’d expect to see on a bowling club’s menu, but a decadent surprise all the same. For traditionalists who love a steak and fries when out on the greens, you won’t be disappointed. In fact, your expectations will be far exceeded with the on-the-bone rib eye and its side of herb and roasted garlic butter and chips.

If you find yourself parched while lawn bowling, just wander inside to the cocktail bar and Bar Manager Matt Le Rade will sort you out. All of the Fizz’s (watermelon, coconut & cantaloupe, pineapple & ginger, and the ‘Unusual Fizz’) are refreshing, while the Tequila & Chamomile Sour is unexpected and the Salted Cuba Libre features a salted cola syrup that will shock and delight your taste buds.

The only thing missing from The Greens is a place to lay your head at night because let’s face it, you’ll be back in the morning to do it all over again.
