Rozelle’s neighbourhood gem – The Provincial

The ProvincialWho doesn’t love a secret? There are some that we know we can’t utter a word about and others which are so good we’re literally bursting to tell someone. Every suburb across Sydney has a neighbourhood dining gem which creates a moral dilemma –  we want to share it with others, but on the other hand we don’t!

Heard of The Provincial? You probably haven’t, its not on the well trodden Balmain or Rozelle strip. You will never stumble across it, you need to be in the know. It’s a beauty of a restaurant, all Moorish white curves, arches filled with wooden wine racks, heaps of cushions and a tapestry above the kitchen area fitted with a mighty fine Spanish Parilla grill which throws up flames you just know are going to be responsible for great things. A new collaboration Chef Tony Cu whose credentials include Aria Restaurant and Quay has brought fine-dining to the inner west.

The Provincial Rozelle

It’s a rare gem indeed, superior sourcing, technical cooking paired with approachable prices and a menu of creative Mediterranean flavours. Starters of burrata with asparagus and heirloom tomatoes, along with a colourful plate of stuffed miniature zucchini flowers on bed of pinenuts and corn salsa are no competition for a signature dish of octopus, finished on the grill with smokey roast capsicum and crispy prosciutto. Mains of bouillabaisse is a bowl of goodies from king prawns to luscious black mussels, just dunk soft Turkish bread into the jus and you are away. Roasted duck is a beauty, fanned slices of perfectly cooked breast are shown off with a beetroot and apple puree. Add a magnificent half head of charred cauliflower (we are swooning), grilled baby carrots topped with spiced yoghurt and all you need is a sticky date pudding with two spoons and life is complete!

The Provincial menu

With a wine list spanning the globe, go local with an unusual find from the Barossa;  a Purple Hand Mourvedre, no tannins here, its silky all the way! Friendly service, local sourcing and a menu which has you wanting to come back for more. This is the kind of local we all wish we had and wish someone told us about. Well now you know…

About the author

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
