One Moncur Champagne Bar

New York has The Bubble Lounge; London has Amuse Bouche and Sydney … Ummm? Until recently we’ve lacked a seriously savvy bar dedicated to the effervescent French magic we know as champagne. Throw your croissants in the air and Ceroc around your charcuterie. “Taxi driver, take me to One Moncur”.

Here you’ll be greeted with a wine entwined mirror bar with more Champagne bling than Madame Pompadour. Sumptuous to regal, elegant to retro there’s a Henrietta Reed sofa, chaise lounge or chair to fit your mood and bubble choice. For champagne lovers this is the jewellery equivalent of being left in Tiffany’s with the instruction ‘go shop’. Corks will be popping across Woollahra with a 30+ champagne list covering off grand marques (that’s your glitzy big names) to the much more exciting (and difficult to sniff out) growers champagnes.

Order Port Steven oysters and pair it with a NV René Geoffroy (100% Chardonnay), move onto a traditional champagne blend (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) and enjoy savoury briochy NV De Sousa. As soon as your Victor Churchill charcuterie plate lands, tuck into prosciutto, pork rillette and a truffle salami which will have you ordering a spectacular Paul Bara Rose quicker than you can say ‘saucisson’.

Wine lovers are well looked after here, too. Finish with handmade chocolates and an Innocent Bystander Moscato. You may find a strange affinity with Madame Bollinger on exit. “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes, I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it if I am; Otherwise I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.” Never a truer word said.

About the author

Karen’s corporate job back in the UK had included entertaining clients in some of the best restaurants. This ultimately sparked a curiosity 'Just how do they do that?' (she confesses she was brought up on meat and vegetables, so this was all very exciting). Currently a Mr & Mrs Smith 'Tastemaker', she’s flashpacked around the world, learning about wine, experiencing different cultures and cuisines and had a two- year love affair with it all. Originally from England, she finally settled in Australia and continues to be besotted by food, wine and travel preferring to focus on the luxury end of town (thread count does matter).
