Sure, George Orwell wrote some influential books and keeps literary tongues wagging as they analyse and praise his intellectual intent. Now, he’s also infiltrated the foodie scene – inspiring the name of a beautiful new dining room at the iconic Builders Arms Hotel.
Moon Under Water. Evocative? Yes. Deliciously so. A fitting title for this lovely venue and the culinary sensations of Andrew McConnell and Josh Murphy.
North of the river in Fitzroy, the recently revamped Builders Arms Hotel has a rich history as one of the area’s landmarks, with 1853 beginnings and an appeal that just keeps evolving.
Keen local diners will know McConnell’s track record as a chef of acclaim. His restaurant-rich CV includes co-owner status at the city’s Cumulus Inc, Fitzroy’s Cutler & Co and St Kilda’s Golden Fields. And Josh? These head chefs like to chop and change – spreading their love for tasty offerings far and wide. Former Head Chef at Cumulus, with a background of training at Three, One, Two and the delightful Circa, the Prince, Josh is a hot dish in the world of local cooking talent, with The Age’s 2012 Young Chef Of The Year Award fresh on his mantelpiece, not a dust particle in sight.
Moon Under Water opens Wednesday, July 4 and serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 6pm, with lunch on Sunday from midday. It’s $75 for a four-course set menu, influenced by fresh European flavours. The menu changes almost weekly to make the most of seasonal freshness and the evolving whim of the adventurous chef. On the pub menu, expect classic, top quality pub fare with generous serves and a friendly attitude. Vegetarians are welcome and dietary requirements can be accommodated too.
