After successfully establishing their first store in the heart of Rose Bay, The Bagel Co. has opened a new location in Surry Hills. We scored a parking spot just outside, then noted the lines of people waiting at their new Reservoir St venue. Teaming with keen bagel buyers of all ages the staff were working double time to place orders. Barry Kluwgant, founder of The Bagel Co. shared that they have been so busy they’ve already sold through many of their popular bagels. Never fear, he jetted to their Rose Bay store to grab some more to rise to the weekend demand. Onya Baz.
Fun fact? Barry is actually a third-generation bagel connoisseur! Barry’s grandfather and father were both in the bagel game and passed down their love of bagels to Barry. “Our secret recipe is over 50 years old and has been enjoyed by bagel-lovers of all kinds. I really want to spread the love of bagels and educate Sydney in the real art of the bagel.” States Barry. “Our traditional bagels are baked using my family’s secret recipe, using premium quality ingredients, the finest fillings and nothing artificial.”
The venue is a paired back sleek design with indoor and outdoor benches. It’s a spot to grab a coffee and a bite to eat, then head back to work or home or enjoy a bagel and schmear in the sun on one of their benches.
The chosse the NYC bagel with house-cured wild salmon, mustard, in-house flavoured cream cheese, rocket, cucumber and pickels brought back memories…instantly we are walking the streets of NYC – bagel in hand, in beanies and coats on windy winters days. With a side of crisps and salty slightly spicy pickles, our trip down memory lane and now full tummies, what more could we ask for for Sunday-funday.
Barry assures us that there are also gluten free, lactose free and vegan menu options available should people have dietaries needing catering to.
It seems the hills are alive…. with the smell of bagels.
