Destination Guide: Mornington Peninsula Perfect

When it’s four degrees outside, heading to the Victorian coast isn’t at the forefront of your mind. But Mornington Peninsula has more to offer than beaches, and at less than an hour’s drive from Melbourne, there are plenty of reasons to throw caution to the winter winds and hit the road.

Atop a pretty countryside rise in Red Hill, T’Gallant Winery is an ideal stop on a July jaunt. Savour a delectable pinot by the fire, or satisfy your sweet tooth with the pink moscato. Notable neighbours Lindenderry and Port Phillip Estate are well worth a visit too.

After your vino fix, fulfil another key need: shopping. Opened by interior stylist Claire Wayman Curio&Curio in Flinders is a new favourite, filled with beautiful treasures, many of them designed and crafted by Claire herself.

Whilst on the credit card trail, visit Tyabb Vintage Emporium. Possibly the best kept secret in vintage, this place will have you doing double-takes at the budget prices and amazing items (hint: check out the coats).

Shopping and drinking is hard work though, and requires sustenance. For comfort food and ambience, stop in at the Merricks General Wine Store, D.O.C Mornington (sister to Carlton pizza sweetheart D.O.C), or Somers General Store.

When your ballet flats are finally crying for respite, and you’ve indulged all your vices, there’s still one left to give in to (it won’t add kilos or debt). The Peninsula Hot Springs is on hand to soothe your weary feet and aching muscles. Try the reflexology pool, or relax completely in the Turkish Bath.

Chances are, by now you’ll feel so relaxed you couldn’t possibly drive home. You had better just stay the night at luxe Kudos Villas in Red Hill.
