Martial lore

Tai Chi teachings
On the edge of the willow pond in Centennial Park, a Snake Creeps Down, a Stork Spreads Wings and a man named Neal Sanders Grasps Sparrow’s Tail.

Neal, who has been practicing the complementary arts of acupuncture, tai chi, Chinese herbal medicine and remedial massage for over 15 years, teaches Tai Chi classes every Sunday morning, rain, hail or shine.

This self-confessed surfer boy is not your average Tai Chi master. He studied under Tai Chi Master Erle Montaigue (the only westerner to ever be given a Masters title by the official body of Tai Chi Accreditation in China) and has been teaching since 1994.

The colourfully titled manoeuvres in Tai Chi are simply a slowed down version of traditional martial arts moves. This gentle form of exercise calms the mind, promotes flexibility and a balanced flow of energy through the body and is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

For something different this Sunday morning, get to Centennial Park and channel your inner Bruce Lee.
