Love cacao love Kakawa

All you want for Christmas? Let’s not be so drastic – there’s more than one thing you want, and Kakawa Chocolates are a good start; hand-made truffles, chocolate bars and slabs, fudges and caramels.  Not to mention a generous wedge of chocolate ice cream in between two layers of cookies.

Head chocolatier Jinsun Kim and co-owner/partner David Ralph (both chefs) opened up their quaint Darlinghurst store to bring a sweet chunk of European chocolate culture to Sydney.

Step off bustling William Street and you’ll immediately be drawn to the glass cabinets filled with rows and rows of ‘hand made edible jewels’. Here you can spend an eternity tailoring your selection with mango ganache and passionfruit, fig and port, and sea salted caramel chocolates. Truffles filled with earl grey or licorice, and champagne or green tea bonbons. Whilst the chocolate range changes regularly you’ll always find their bestsellers like salt caramel and raspberry and crystallised mint. Try their fresh herb and tea truffles too – the more difficult to make due to the delicate task of balancing flavours.

All Kakawa products are gluten free, down to the stirrers for their hot chocolates (of which there are a generous 7 varieties).  Everything is made on the premises, so if you’re around on a weekday you might see Jinsun weaving her magic in the open plan kitchen.

Right now you’ll also find perfect stocking fillers – nut and berry trees, Santas, snowmen and reindeers, white Xmas and rum raisin truffles. Buy some extra as odds are, they’ll fill your stomach well before then.
