In Love With Little Jean

Some people like Italian. Others prefer Thai. And some just crave the freshest produce around. Nowadays, the latter is basically a cuisine type all on its own. Italian, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, All About The Produce. It’s the new cuisine.

The region-specific flavours and signature dishes are less important than the quality of the food that goes into it. And nothing could be truer about the food at Little Jean. The menu features simple, delicious dishes that use nothing but the freshest produce around. Locally and sustainably sourced where possible, of course.

Located next door to About Life in Kiora Lane, the new dining hub in Double Bay, Little Jean is tucked away from street view so unless you’re a local stopping by Woolies for your weekly grocery shop, or you’re in the know, you might never know it was there. The interior is fresh, bright, simple and modern. The atmosphere is inviting and bustling, and very tempting to come for your morning coffee and find yourself still there when lunch time rolls around.

The people running the show are the couple behind The Sheaf Bistro, chef Christopher Stockdale and front of house manager Jeanette Woerner. They know Double Bay better than the back of their hands, and they know what the crowd wants, which is why they made sure all your favourite dishes from The Sheaf (like their eye fillet steak and eton mess) made it onto the menu at Little Jean too. Also expect plenty of new additions, all revolving around one thing – really great produce that’s in season.

It’s not often we rave about the salad selections on a menu, but Little Jean have really nailed it. The heirloom tomato salad is colourful, juicy and bursting with flavour, while the salad of fried cauliflower, currants, walnuts, sumac and tahini yoghurt is naughty but oh so nice. For lunch and dinner you are spoilt for choice – deciding between duck, pork cutlets, octopus, steak, salmon and more is no easy task. And this won’t help but… it’s seriously all good. You can’t go wrong.

Little-Jean-Breakfast-Kale

And let’s not forget about breakfast. Pastries, biscuits and tarts are baked on site daily and the breakfast menu is not your usual eggs every which way. Try the sauté of kale, Swiss brown mushrooms and greens with miso dressing and soft eggs or Arborio cooked in rice milk, vanilla bean and honey with poached pears and pistachio praline. We’re drooling just thinking about it.

If you haven’t re-discovered the new side of Double Bay yet, then this is the place to start.
