Supernormal Finds a Home

Supernormal has finally opened its doors. Some of us have been sitting at Supernormal Canteen waiting for this to happen; others never got the chance to go to the pop-up. But now 180 Flinders Lane within the 171 Collins Street Building is home to Supernormal, the newest member of the Andrew McConnell family.

It comes as no surprise after seeing the menu at Supernormal Canteen, but the menu at Supernormal is Asian-focused with a few favourites we all miss from Golden Fields. The menu is broken down into snacks, the raw bar, appetizers, dumplings and bao, plates and vegetables, meats and fish, and dessert. So there’s a lot to cover in the one seating.

Start with a house-made kimchi, cabbage, and Korean radish, move to the famous New England lobster roll, or the duck bao – twice cooked duck served with plum sauce. Braised short robs with pepper sauce, or the whole roasted John Dory with spring onion, and ginger take care of the bigger dishes, while the peanut butter parfait with salted caramel, and soft chocolate is a must in any life. We mean visit. Actually no, we’ll stick with life.

The wine list has just under 20 varieties by the glass including the Holly’s garden #3A Blanc de Noirs from Whitlands Victoria, and the 2012 Keller Riesling from Rheinhessen Germany. Beers and cocktails sit along side the sake menu, which sees seven options on offer. If you’re a drinkers you’ll be well taken care of.

The space is varied with a large open kitchen bar, booths, benches, and a main dining area. What’s truly exciting is that they have a private dining space and a karaoke room. Sign. Us. Up.
