Hidden in a basement off Chapel St, Kaya is South Yarra’s fittest new members-only club. You even get a sunflower yellow, Country Road-style duffle bag when you join. All the cool kids are wearing them.
Okay, so Kaya is a Health Club not a night club. They’ve got yogis instead of DJs, there’s water on tap but that’s it.
Gym is a dirty word at Kaya. Here the focus is on mind and body.
Expect invitations for complimentary Yoga workshops to pop into your inbox, newsletters, O&M Detox Shampoo in the changing rooms and enough GHDs for everyone.
Owners Christian and Koula Ruggeri have come south from Sydney’s Elixr Health Clubs and they’ve brought the best workouts with them.
That means 25 reformer pilates beds, with 20 more on the way. Beloved by Sydney’s super fit, and the go to class for Hollywood’s starlets, the reformer beds work you from head to toe and you hardly know it.
In 45 minutes the Elixr-trained instructors are happy to guide newbies through their paces but the spring-loaded machines are fool proof. You’ll love the Scoot lunges and so do your skinny jeans.
Yogis trained in India, Bali and Thailand practice Hatha, Ashtanga and Vinyasa in the purpose-built studio where you won’t be blinded by bright lights during your bridge. The friendly Buddhas up the front are great for a focus point.
Meditation and relaxation are awesome, but the spinning classes and weights studio get your adrenalin going. And the best part about a brand new treadmills and cross trainers? Email and Internet access while you workout.
