Masters at work

The debut of a new work by master choreographer Graeme Murphy is reason enough for dance fans to jeté in delight, but the arrival of Infinity is even more of a celebration.

Part of the Australian Ballet’s 50th year celebration, Infinity is actually three works in one: Murphy’s new piece, The Narrative of Nothing, exploring the themes of excess and drought, Stephen Page’s collaboration between the Bangarra Dance Theatre and the Australian Ballet, and a contemporary piece by Chunky Move founder Gideon Obarzanek.

Obarzanek’s There’s Definitely a Prince Involved has him asking a wide range of people, “What is ballet?”, with their answers forming the centrepiece for the work. Warumuk: In The Dark Night features music by Page’s composer brother David with Dhuwa and Yirritja songs and stories from North East Arnhem Land.

Lucky you’ll be the first in the world to see these contemporary dance pieces when it opens next Friday. True aficionados should note that a post-performance Q&A with the Australian Ballet’s artistic director David McAllister, artistic staff and dancers takes place on March 5 and is included in the ticket price.
