Meatballs & Sons feeds our meatball obsession

M&S2

Melbourne has been crushing on Meatballs for a while now. Meatball & Wine Bar have been taking care of that relationship well. But we’ve got another venue catering to our love of round meats in Meatballs & Sons on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy. Their philosophy is ‘goodness all ’round’ – so punny –  and they want to position themselves as old fashion, in a good way.

The two story 70-seater, which was designed by Kano (the same guy behind the MissChu’s fit out), looks like a cross between your mum’s house and your local bar. It’s like your childhood dreams and adult tastes have been rolled into one – they even have gumball machines.

The team that has brought this new offering together is made up of Prini and Carlos Swinton-Lee, Jo Duffield, and Daniel Schai. All of who have a serious amount of hospitality years under their belt.

The menu does put a lot of things into balls, starting with dough balls with herbed butter and cheesy chorizo dough balls. Hello. It moves through some burgers, ribs, and salads before we get to the ‘balls’ menu. Not afraid to jump continents we see Tandoori chicken balls with homemade raita, mango chutney, and pappadums along side Greek lamb balls with creamy Persian feta, baby spinach, olives, and sun ripened tomatoes. There are also sliders, and Mum’s home baked apple pie with custard and cream that’s calling your name.

The drinks list keeps things simple again with a handful of cocktails, 11 wines available, 10 bottles beers and two beers on tap including the Prickly Moses Summer Ale.

No fuss. We like that.
