What do cycling and crochet have in common? Well, not a lot actually — except for the fact that your grandmother probably dabbled in both at some stage in her life. But the two find themselves strange bedfellows at this year’s Sydney Design Festival.

On August 6 and 7 the festival will host CultureCycle, inviting Sydneysiders to participate in an afternoon of cultural sightseeing via bicycle interspersed with — you guessed it — lessons on how to create fabric by pulling bits of string through an aluminium hook.

After upper your energy levels with a flat white at Bourke Street’s Remy and Lee’s (it’s still 8.30am, after all) you’ll cycle to CarriageWorks before continuing to the Powerhouse Museum and then on to the Australian Museum.

Then it’s time to make your nana as proud as you’re making your personal trainer with a post-lunch crochet workshop, before jumping back on your bike for the home run.

If you thought crochet was an activity reserved for darning ugly afghan blankets and out-of-date doilies while lazing in front of the television, think again and give this tour a go.

At the very least it’s a breath of fresh air, and chances are you’ll be ‘hooked’.
