You Can’t Beat The Bagels at 5 & Dime Cafe

Carbs glorious carbs. That’s what runs through our heads the second anyone mentions bagels. There is something just so wonderful about bagels that make them a very special form of carbs. 5 & Dime Bagels couldn’t agree more and recently opened a cafe dedicated to these bready doughnuts. Zev Forman, the creator behind of 5 & Dime, grew up on bagels in New York and surprise surprise, anything he found in Oz didn’t quite make the cut. So he decided to make his own right here in Melbourne, selling them at markets around town.

After heading back to New York to learn just how to make them like the best, Zev has mastered bagels that are hand crafted, boiled and baked using the traditional method and the best local ingredients. People love them. Like really love them. So what did Forman decide to do next? Open his own café and bakery where people could come and find them any time they wanted (read: Monday- Friday 7am-3pm).

The tight space has been fitted out by Brand Works and Beyond the Pixel and is all counter and booth seating. You don’t need a lot of space for bagel eating.

You can choose from plain, onion, rye, poppy seed, everything, cinnamon and raisin, sesame, salt, or dill. Then you choose from a range of toppings: PB&J, strawberry cream cheese, garlic chive and basil cream cheese, bacon maple cream cheese, avocado, vegemite, and even cured salmon.

To continue the American theme, there is filter coffee pouring. To keep us coffee snobs happy there are single origins on rotation and it’s all looked after by Promised Land from Collingwood.

Happy carb eating friends.
